The Trunk Bunk Guide
Unsure if the Trunk Bunk is right for your vehicle? Need some help figuring out sizing, dimensions or other fitting considerations? We’re here to help!

What is the Trunk Bunk?
Based on a classic vanlifer design, the Trunk Bunk is a wooden sleeper system that provides an elevated bed platform in a wide variety of vehicles. Because it can expand, contract and be purchased in two standard lengths the Trunk Bunk is suited well for many adventure-mobiles. For some vehicles it’s an easy fit, but for others it may take some measuring and spacial considerations. Let’s figure out if the Trunk Bunk is right for your car!
Is the Trunk Bunk Right for You?
Dimensions
The Trunk Bunk comes in two different lengths to choose from, 5.5 feet long and 6 feet long. At its most contracted it measures 24 inches wide, and at its maximum expansion measures 42 inches wide. So long as your vehicle is capable of having a relatively flat, even surface in the back that measures a minimum of 5.5 feet long and 24 inches wide the Trunk Bunk will work for you. Most vehicles with folding or removable seats that fold down with a relatively flush surface area are compatible with the Trunk Bunk.
Clearance
Sitting about 8 inches off the ground, the Trunk Bunk offers a solid amount of storage space underneath while not sitting up so high that you can’t sit up or feel like you’re sleeping in a coffin. Because it does not sit exceptionally high up the Trunk Bunk will not clear the wheel wells of most truck beds or vehicle interiors. In the future it is our intention to offer a higher sitting version or raised foot accessory to help meet the needs of those who want a higher sitting sleeper platform for their vehicle.
Storage
Deploying, moving and storing the Trunk Bunk is extremely easy. Because it comes apart in two different pieces (either 2.5′ or 3′ long each depending on your total length) it can be stowed away in the back of your vehicle or elsewhere without taking up tons of space. This makes it a great option for those who don’t want to make permanent alterations to their vehicle or may need their full seat capacity during the day. You can even transfer it to use in future vehicles if you upgrade your adventure-mobile someday!
Final Considerations
To determine is the Trunk Bunk is right for your vehicle you may need to bust out the tape measure and ensure that there is a minimum viable flat surface no shorter than 5.5 feet long and at least 24 inches wide. If you have that, then you can make it work! Currently the maximum length of the Trunk Bunk we can offer is 6 feet. We realize this makes it non-ideal for anyone who is especially tall, but there are a lot of creative solutions for ways you can rest your feet off the edge of the bed platform if it comes down to it. It is also our intention to release an extension platform that adds an extra foot of length to the Trunk Bunk very soon.
The Trunk Bunk is plenty big enough to hold Thermarest-style inflatable camping pads, twin mattresses or other smaller form sleeping cushions. It is not wide enough to hold “full” or “double” sized mattresses without the edges of those mattresses spilling off the sides a little bit, although this can work sometimes if your vehicle interior is actually wide enough to hold a mattress that large. Think of the Trunk Bunk as being about the same surface area as your average 2 person backpacking tent and that should give you a good idea of what you are working with.
